Frequently Asked Questions
About Dental Emergencies
Check out our FAQs to learn more about what to do in case of a dental emergency.
How soon do I need to visit the dentist during dental emergencies?
In the event of a dental emergency, it’s crucial to visit the dentist as soon as possible. Some situations, such as a knocked-out tooth, require immediate attention — ideally within 30 minutes — to increase the chances of saving the tooth. Other emergencies, like severe toothaches or dental abscesses, should also be addressed promptly to alleviate pain and prevent further complications.
What are the most common dental emergencies?
The most common dental emergencies include:
- Toothaches: Severe, persistent tooth pain can indicate a serious issue and should not be ignored.
- Knocked-Out Tooth: This requires immediate attention to increase the chances of reimplantation.
- Chipped, Cracked, or Fractured Teeth: These can cause significant discomfort and lead to further dental issues if not treated promptly.
- Dental Abscess: An abscessed tooth is a serious infection that can cause severe pain, swelling, fever, and a bad taste in the mouth.
- Lost Filling or Crown: This can expose your tooth to damage and should be addressed as soon as possible.
Do I need to pay more for dental emergencies?
The cost for emergency dental care can vary depending on the nature and severity of the issue. It’s possible that emergency services may carry additional costs due to the immediate attention and resources required. It’s always best to discuss this with your dental clinic to understand the potential costs involved.
What payment options do you accept?
At Karrinyup Dental Centre, a variety of payment options are accepted to make dental care affordable and convenient. These include:
- Health Funds: All health fund providers are accepted, allowing patients with any type of health insurance to use their benefits to cover the cost of their dental treatment.
- Fund My Dental: This option allows you to get the dental care you need without worrying about high upfront costs. You can sign up for the $39 weekly plan and make small, interest-free payments until your balance is paid off.
- SuperCare: This Australian owned company helps everyday Australians access superannuation to pay for dental treatments.
- Child Dental Benefits Schedule: This government initiative provides $1000 worth of dental services for children over two calendar years.
- Metropolitan Patients Dental Subsidy Scheme: This scheme provides eligible patients who are on the waitlist for a public dentist to undergo subsidised general dental care through a private dentist.
- Dental Treatment for DVA Card Holders: All Dental Treatment for Department Veteran Affairs card holders are accepted.
For more information, you can visit the Payment Options page on the Karrinyup Dental Centre website.
Are you available after hours?
While Karrinyup Dental Centre operates during normal clinic hours, after-hours availability is assessed on a case-by-case basis. If you’re experiencing a dental emergency after hours, you can contact Dr. James directly on 0404 399 788. Otherwise, you can call the clinic number on 08 9473 6338 during regular hours to schedule an appointment or discuss your dental needs.
What should I do if I knock out a tooth?
If you knock out a tooth, it’s important to handle it very carefully. Avoid touching the root, as it can be easily damaged. If possible, try to place the tooth back in its socket, ensuring it’s facing the right way. If you can’t reinsert it, keep the tooth moist by placing it in milk or a tooth preservation product available at pharmacies.
It’s crucial to get to Karrinyup Dental Centre as quickly as possible, as time is of the essence in saving the tooth. In the meantime, use a cold compress to relieve any pain or swelling at the site
Can I wait to see if my toothache goes away on its own?
While it’s true that some minor toothaches might resolve on their own, a severe or persistent toothache can be a sign of a more serious dental issue, such as an abscess or an infection. These conditions can have serious health implications if left untreated, including the spread of infection and loss of the tooth. If you’re experiencing a severe or persistent toothache, it’s important to contact Karrinyup Dental Centre as soon as possible to schedule an appointment.
What should I do if I have a dental emergency but I'm afraid of the dentist?
Dental anxiety is a common issue, and at Karrinyup Dental Centre, we understand and are here to help. We strive to create a comfortable, stress-free environment for our patients. We offer a range of options to help manage dental anxiety, including the use of sedation dentistry.
If you’re experiencing a dental emergency but are anxious about treatment, please let us know when you call. We can discuss your concerns and work with you to find a solution that makes your visit as comfortable as possible. Your health and comfort are our top priorities.
